Lorem ipsum<\/strong><\/em> (\/\u02ccl\u0254\u02d0.r\u0259m \u02c8\u026ap.s\u0259m\/<\/a> LOR-\u0259m IP-s\u0259m<\/em><\/a>) is a dummy or placeholder text<\/a> commonly used in graphic design, publishing, and web development. It is typically a corrupted version of De finibus bonorum et malorum<\/a><\/em>, a 1st-century BC text by the Roman<\/a> statesman and philosopher Cicero<\/a>, with words altered, added, and removed to make it nonsensical and improper Latin<\/a>. The first two words are the truncation<\/a> of dolorem ipsum<\/em> (“pain itself”). Lorem ipsum<\/em>‘s purpose is to permit a page layout to be designed, independently of the copy<\/a> that will subsequently populate it, or to demonstrate various fonts<\/a> of a typeface<\/a> without meaningful text that could be distracting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Versions of the Lorem ipsum<\/em> text have been used in typesetting<\/a> since the late 1960s, when Letraset<\/a> transfer sheets containing the placeholder text popularized it.[1]<\/a><\/sup> Popular word processors<\/a>, including Pages<\/a> and Microsoft Word<\/a>, have since adopted Lorem ipsum<\/em>,[2]<\/a><\/sup> as have many LaTeX<\/a> packages,[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> web content managers such as Joomla!<\/a> and WordPress<\/a>, and CSS<\/a> libraries such as Semantic UI.[not in body<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Lorem ipsum<\/em> text is derived from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero<\/a>‘s De finibus bonorum et malorum<\/a><\/em>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> The physical source may have been the 1914 Loeb Classical Library<\/a> edition of De finibus<\/em>, where the Latin text, presented on the left-hand (even) pages, breaks off on page 34 with “Neque porro quisquam est qui do-<\/em>” and continues on page 36 with “lorem ipsum …<\/em>.”[1]<\/a><\/sup> The Lorem ipsum<\/em> text continues with excerpts that appear to generally match the layouts of pages 56, 70, and 118,[8]<\/a><\/sup> suggesting that the layout of the Loeb book was the source of the dummy text seen today.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first published explanation of the text’s origin is attributed to Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden\u2013Sydney College<\/a>. McClintock connected Lorem ipsum<\/em> to Cicero’s writing sometime before 1982[further explanation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup> by searching for recorded uses of the Latin word consectetur<\/a><\/em>, which was rarely used<\/a> in classical literature.[2]<\/a><\/sup> McClintock first published his discovery in a 1994 letter to John McWade, the editor of the Before & After<\/em> magazine,[9]<\/a><\/sup> contesting McWade’s earlier claim that Lorem ipsum<\/em> had no meaning.[2]<\/a><\/sup> That letter claimed that the placeholder text had been used since the 1500s, but McClintock admitted in a 2026 interview that that date had been a guess with no evidence to back it up.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The version in use today is derived from Letraset transfer sheets first published in 1966.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup> According to Letraset designer Dave Farey, the text was supplied by British librarian James Mosley<\/a> as an alternative to the Quousque tandem abutere<\/a><\/em> text from elsewhere in Cicero’s writings that had been used in typography manuals since the 1730s.[12]<\/a><\/sup> Monotype<\/a> typographer Dan Rhatigan theorized that the Letraset version deliberately “garbled” the original Latin text to better match the letter frequency<\/a> of the English language.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sections of De finibus bonorum et malorum<\/em> from which Lorem ipsum<\/em> ultimately derives is one in which Cicero proposes that pleasure be obtained rationally<\/a> rather than impulsively<\/a>.[a]<\/a><\/sup> The relevant sections as printed in the source is reproduced below, with fragments used in Lorem ipsum<\/em> underlined. [32] But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of reprobating pleasure and extolling pain arose. To do so, I will give you a complete account of the system and expound the teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter extremely painful consequences. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?

[33] On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammeled and nothing prevents us from being what we like best, every pleasure is welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures must be repudiated and annoyances accepted.
